The City of Steamboat Springs is seeking community feedback on a conceptual project proposal by the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club (SSWSC) to develop the Youth Sports Center. The proposed facility would be located at Howelsen Hill and is intended to support Steamboat’s long-standing commitment to youth athletics and recreation. A survey previously distributed by the city included the conceptual site image shown to the right, and the information below provides answers to frequently asked questions about the proposal.

The project proposes a multi-use youth athletics facility that would include indoor recreation space, a strength and conditioning area, a ticket office and welcome center, operational storage, and year-round public restrooms to replace the current seasonal bathrooms. The facility would replace the existing SSWSC gym and several temporary structures while also improving infrastructure for community events at the ski jump outrun. The space is designed to support SSWSC programs as well as provide opportunities for other youth sports organizations and community groups to utilize the facility.

The proposed facility would expand the current training space from accommodating about 15 athletes at a time to roughly 100 users, helping meet growing demand for youth sports programming. The project was developed through the 2023 Howelsen Park User Group process commissioned by Steamboat Springs City Council, which included community organizations, Parks and Recreation staff, and a comprehensive traffic and parking study to ensure the proposal supports existing park uses and long-term community needs.

This image represents the opportunity for usable deck space on the rooftop of the building, which could be incorporated and extended into the grade of the ski jump outrun. This would create additional usable space for all proposed uses, including community events. These are NOT architectural renderings of the building. The final architectural design would complement the finishes of historic buildings at Howelsen Park.
