New Fire Station & City Hall
The multi-million-dollar project will design and construct a new downtown City Hall and Fire Station. Built on the current City Hall location (137 10th Street), the facility will create a downtown civic campus housing numerous municipal services in a central site that is easily accessible by citizens.
Over the process, an extensive community engagement campaign will accompany the different phases of the project working with the public to create an environment that fosters confidence and trust.

The gabled roofline on the Oak St. elevation of the fire station that is attempting to match Centennial Hall's gable will make the building too tall compared to neighboring buildings. Centennial Hall's gable is approximately 25' to the peak, about 20' shorter than the 45' designed for the gable of the fire station. Nordic Lodge also has a shorter facade of approx 25' facing Oak. The only portion of the Nordic Lodge that is taller, approximately 35', is located internally on the alley. Therefore, the fire house facade on Oak St. should be limited to the height of the Oak St. facades of Centennial Hall and Nordic Lodge. The hose dry tower, closer to the alley and internal to the building, could be allowed the 45' height, taller but more inline with the internal alley facade of the Nordic Lodge. The facade on Oak can be lowered by eliminating the gable and using a flat or mountain-modern low angled roof.

Abandon the idea of constructing a “civic center” at 10th Street. A civic center is not needed. This was not requested by the community, takes away valuable parking, increases vehicular traffic and parking problems in adjacent residential neighborhoods and will be very costly to maintain. The public should decide if a civic center should be constructed. The City should present a thorough unbiased study identifying pros and cons including a traffic study to show the potential impacts and present the long range maintenance costs. We have enough traffic and parking problems without closing a major street and removing additional downtown parking. Our City Council and City Staff should not be asking us if we prefer Concept 1 or Concept 2, they should be asking us if we want a Civic Center and if we are willing to fund the long term maintenance. Why is there not a 3rd option presented for us to comment on with a concept that shows a design without a civic center?

Initiating sirens and lights when leaving via Oak St. at times when doing so is unnecessary for traffic compliance, such as during the night, should be prohibited.

This would allow for quicker access to Lincoln and most emergencies vs. exiting Oak and driving around the block.
