Project Overview

In partnership with Steamboat Ski Resort, Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), and Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR), the City of Steamboat Springs is in the process of identifying and analyzing locations for passenger rail stations to provide the best access and highest benefits for Steamboat Springs residents and visitors. In addition to assessing location feasibility, suitability, environmental impacts, and infrastructure requirements, the process will also solicit feedback from the Steamboat Springs community to understand priorities in functionality, accessibility, and amenities.

The study is a key local component of the broader Colorado Mountain Rail initiative, an effort to expand passenger rail service from Craig to Denver. As that vision advances, the Steamboat Springs study will focus on identifying station locations that provide the best access and highest benefit for residents and visitors alike.

In addition to evaluating site feasibility, suitability, environmental considerations, and infrastructure needs, the City is seeking community input on the values, priorities, accessibility needs, and amenities that should guide station-area planning. Current in-person and online engagement activities are listed below. Additional opportunities to provide input will be offered over the next six months as the study progresses.
